A seed planted by the United Nations in the early 20th century has evolved into a beautiful tree representing the annual celebration of International Women’s day. Celebrated on March 8 every year, Women’s day has a rich history of women fighting for equality. This day honors women’s achievements across all fields and raises awareness of the struggle of women in day-to-day life.
CELEBRATING THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT OF WOMEN
International Women’s Day (IWD) began in the 1900s, and according to its website, “a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.” On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to salute the spirit of women.
“Saluting our indomitable #NariShakti on International Women’s Day! India takes pride in the many accomplishments of the women of our nation. It is our Government’s honor to be getting the opportunity to work towards furthering women empowerment across a wide range of sectors.”
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChooseToChallenge.
Here are some ways to celebrate International Women’s Day :
- Involve Men and those people who identify and recognize beyond the gender discrimination in the conversation and celebration.
When your planning for celebrating IWD via various activities in your workplace, college, school make sure to include and encourage your male friends or teammates to participate in the ceremonies and champion gender quality together.
- Start a book club with your colleagues or friends
Understanding the problems faced by women across the world in day-to-day life is important to step in promoting gender equality. Organize / Host a book club in your locality/ workplace where the people can express their opinions and give suggestions on educating women’s issues, empowerment, and achievements.
- Host a Film Screening.
If you’re someone who is interested in the art of cinema, screening a women-centric film would be a great way of celebrating this auspicious day. Representation in the film has a huge impact on how audiences learn about gender norms, the criticism faced by women, and the struggles of their daily lives.
According to the 2019 Celluloid Ceiling report, women accounted for 20% of all directors, writers, producers, executive producers, editors, and cinematographers working on the top 100 grossing films.
Sometimes, simple words of affection to your loved ones can go a long way in encouraging and inspiring them to keep focusing on their dreams. Whether it’s your grandmother, mother aunt, sister, teacher, daughter, wife, girlfriend, or friend, send a text or call them and share how important they are and let them know you are gifted to have them in your life.
